The Story behind the Station

Constructed in 1895 by the Allegheny Valley Railroad, the Kittanning Passenger Station and Freight Depot served as the transportation and economic gateway to Armstrong County for more than six decades. These structures facilitated the movement of coal, steel, glass, agricultural goods, and passengers throughout the region.

The station platforms witnessed departures for military service, arrivals of new residents, and the steady rhythm of industrial growth that defined Western Pennsylvania. At the time of its opening, local newspapers described the depot as “one of the handsomest stations in Pennsylvania.”

Today, the structures remain rare surviving examples of late 19th-century railroad architecture in the Allegheny River corridor.

Preserving Infrastructure.

Creating Economic Opportunity.

The restoration of the Kittanning Passenger Station and Freight Depot is the Armstrong County Historical Society’s current capital initiative. We are actively pursuing a multi-phase funding strategy through federal and state grants, private foundation support, corporate sponsorships, community donations, and organized fundraising efforts. Immediate investment is imperitive to stabilize and preserve these historic structures for adaptive public use and long-term community benefit.

  • Adaptive reuse for public event and gathering space

  • Heritage tourism expansion along the Armstrong Trails

  • Economic stimulus for downtown Kittanning businesses

  • Educational programming and historical interpretation

  • Long-term preservation of rare 19th-century railroad architecture

IMMEDIATE PRIORITY:
Structural Stabilization

The immediate priority of the Kittanning Passenger Station and Freight Depot restoration is comprehensive structural stabilization, beginning with foundation stabilization of the passenger station. Active water infiltration threatens framing members, interior integrity, and long-term structural viability. Without timely intervention, deterioration will accelerate, significantly increasing future restoration costs and jeopardizing preservation efforts. Interior restoration cannot be completed until the critical exterior stabilization work is completed, including wall settlement crack repair and roof replacement.

Adaptive Reuse & Community Impact

Upon stabilization, the restored structures will be adapted for public programming, event use, and heritage interpretation, creating a sustainable community asset that supports tourism, education, and economic revitalization in downtown Kittanning.

Funding Strategy & Partnership Opportunities

The Armstrong County Historical Society is actively pursuing federal and state preservation grants, private foundation support, corporate sponsorships, and community contributions to advance this multi-phase restoration effort. We welcome partnership inquiries from contractors, preservation specialists, businesses, and philanthropic leaders committed to safeguarding regional heritage infrastructure.
